Vacation and Reading Lists
So I found out last Thursday/Friday that I’ll actually be on vacation most of this week (that same day I also found out I had Monday off, which was awesome because we’ve never been closed any other holiday weekend).
Thursday morning we will be leaving for the Eastern Shore. I only have to work a day and a half this week (half day tomorrow due to a therapy appointment I couldn’t get scheduled any later in the day) which is great because the last pay period I turned in over 100hrs (my paycheck on Friday is gonna rooooock).I’m trying to think of what to bring to read on my vacation (my favourite reading spot is the hammock they have down there strung up by the dock). Last time I went down there for a week I read 2 of the Song of Ice and Fire books (yeah, I’m a voracious reader)
This time I’m thinking of brining:
Walking Dead Compendium 2 (I’ll probably finish this the first day)
The Cosmos- Carl Sagan (I really want all of his books, this is the only one I have so far)
Ordinary Men: Reserve Police Battalion 101 and the Final Solution in Poland- Christopher R. Browning (started, haven’t finished)
Berlin Diary- William Schirer (I’ve been engrossed by WWII novels and accounts since I was 10. Stephen Ambrose is still my favourite writer on the subject but I’ve read all of his stuff now).Does anyone else have any reading suggestions? I haven’t read anything new in a loooong time, the books above are ones I’ve either started and haven’t finished or are some of the very few books I own that I haven’t read yet. I’d love to have something entirely new altogether to bring and get into while I’m down there.

@ascultafili - I think I might just pick up that Cormack McCarthy book today on my way out. I absolutely loved The Road. Read that in one sitting.
I don’t really have any good suggestions, but… Have fun! Reading in a hammock sounds lovely!
Do you like military stories in general? Like say the raid on bin ladens fortress? Or others like that?
@olwd - Actually, my interest is pretty contained to just WWI & WWII as far as military stories go, though I’ve been getting into more Vietnam stuff too. Haven’t read much about post-Cold War military stuff though.
I’ve read some stories that were made into the Band of Brothers series. First got one of them from my History teacher.
@olwd - Ah yes, that series was based off of a Stephen Ambrose book by the same name (Winters also published his own book that I need to get). Ambrose’s son wrote the Pacific which was also made into a mini-series.
Fun factoid: My ex-fiance tried to get me to watch the Notebook one day (I have never seen that movie and I never plan on seeing it). I was so shocked and appalled i ejected the DVD and put on Band of Brothers for the next 8 hours to make a man out of him again… no wonder he broke up with me.
LOL, that is a funny factoid!!! I’ve never seen it either. “Make a man out of him again” HILARIOUS!!!
Yes, Winters, that name sounds familiar. He was the officer and I found another one by one of the sergeants in the group.
The last thing I read was the “How to operate your self cleaning oven” instruction manual for our oven. Probably not what you are looking for. I enjoy the cereal box in the morning and an occasional Pringle can label. Perhaps a nice National Geographic magazine would be entertaining?
when I was in college I had to do a report on Ambrose for my thesis class. I gave the presentation on a Friday and a few hours later he died.
Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant
The Conquest of Gaul by Caesar -
They might sound boring, but they’ll surprise you.
@we_deny_everything - Those actually don’t sound boring at all. Adding them to the list!
if you like military stuff, look up The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brian.
Have a great time and I have no suggestions as any space time I have I am out with my camera snooping through the woods.
